Choose the Tremco product by the joint
Two different products solve joints on this page: gun-grade sealant applied in the field, and pre-compressed foam seals supplied cut to the joint. Start with the movement the joint has to take and the substrate on either side of it, then confirm the ASTM C920 class, the color and the package size the specification calls for.

Movement capabilities, cure times and standards above are the manufacturer’s published values at their stated test conditions. Color availability differs between the 10 oz cartridge and the 20 oz sausage in every line, and Willseal is supplied cut to the joint, so those items are quoted rather than carted. Check the current data sheet before approving a substitution.
Joint planning
Plan the joint before the sealant
A sealant failure is usually a joint-design or substrate-preparation problem rather than a product problem. Four things decide the outcome.
Chemistry follows the substrate
Polyurethane and silicone are not interchangeable. Silicone holds up on glass, coated metal and curtain wall and stays flexible in the cold; Spectrem 1 and Spectrem 2 are the glazing and façade answers here. Polyurethane is the usual choice where the joint will be painted or where an abrasion-resistant surface is wanted.
Staining matters on natural stone. Spectrem 1 is tested to ASTM C1248 for staining; if the joint runs across limestone, marble or granite, make the non-staining test part of the submittal rather than an assumption.
Movement class against real movement
Compare the calculated joint movement with the product class, not with the brand. Vulkem 116 is a Class 25 sealant at ±25%; Dymonic 100 is Class 50 with a published +100/-50%; Spectrem 1 is Class 100/50. A joint that moves more than the sealant allows will fail no matter how well it is tooled.
Depth control is part of the design. Tremco recommends closed-cell polyethylene backer rod or its own sealant tape to set bead depth, and a bond-breaker tape where the joint is too shallow for backer rod, so the sealant bonds on two faces rather than three.
Substrate condition, primer and temperature
Dymonic 100 is the one line here published for damp or green concrete without outgassing, which is why it shows up on precast and early-schedule work. Vulkem 116 is the opposite: the data sheet says not over damp, green or contaminated surfaces.
Primer is product- and substrate-specific — Tremco names a low-VOC primer for porous substrates and a separate non-porous primer for metals and plastics. Tremco also recommends surface temperatures at or above about 40°F when sealant is applied, with a separate cold-weather bulletin below that.
Pre-compressed foam is ordered, not cut on site
Willseal arrives pre-compressed and sized to the joint, with pressure-sensitive adhesive on one face, and expands to fill the opening without invasive anchoring. Because the material is sized to a joint-width range, the order needs the joint dimensions rather than a linear-foot count alone.
Measure the joint at the temperature it will be installed in, and record the minimum and maximum openings the joint will see. Vertical, horizontal traffic, fire-rated and pick-resistant versions are different products, not options on one product.

Specifications, color and quantity
Use the project specification and the current Tremco data to confirm the product, the color and the quantity before the order goes in.
Read the specification as written
Division 07 92 00 normally names an ASTM C920 type, grade, class and use rather than a product. Match all four, and check whether non-staining (C1248) or structural glazing (C1184) performance is also required before you substitute.
Confirm color and package together
Color availability is not the same across the 10 oz cartridge and the 20 oz sausage in any of these lines, and Tremco’s full standard range is wider than what is stocked. Tell us the color name from the spec and we will confirm the size it comes in.
Estimate from the joint, not the box
Sealant yield comes from joint width times depth times length; a deeper bead than the design needs is wasted material and worse movement performance. For Willseal, send the joint width range, the length and whether the joint is vertical, horizontal or traffic-bearing.

Tremco sealant questions
Dymonic 100 or Vulkem 116?
Movement capability and substrate condition decide it. Vulkem 116 is the general-purpose gun-grade polyurethane at ASTM C920 Class 25, ±25% movement, and it is specified constantly for ordinary exterior joints and perimeter caulking. Dymonic 100 is the high-movement option at Class 50 with a published +100/-50%, and it is the one that can go on damp or green concrete without outgassing. If the joint is wide, moving hard, or on new concrete, it is Dymonic 100.
Polyurethane or silicone for my joint?
Silicone lasts longer under UV and stays flexible in cold weather, which is why Spectrem 1 and Spectrem 2 are the curtain wall, metal panel and glazing products. Polyurethane is generally chosen where the joint will be painted or wants a tougher surface, and Dymonic 100 and Vulkem 116 cover that. Watch staining on natural stone: Spectrem 1 is tested to ASTM C1248, and that test belongs in the submittal when limestone, marble or granite is involved.
Can Tremco sealant go on green or damp concrete?
Dymonic 100 can — Tremco publishes it as adhering to damp or green concrete without outgassing, which is unusual for a polyurethane and is the reason it is common on precast and fast-schedule work. Vulkem 116 cannot; its data sheet says not to apply over damp, green or contaminated surfaces. Confirm the primer for your substrate either way.
What is the difference between Spectrem 1 and Spectrem 2?
Modulus. Spectrem 1 is ultra-low modulus — ASTM C920 Class 100/50 with +100/-50% movement accommodation — which makes it the choice for dynamically moving joints between materials with a high coefficient of expansion, and for difficult-to-bond substrates. Spectrem 2 is a medium-modulus neutral-cure silicone for glazing and perimeter work, including two-sided structural glazing, where Tremco publishes it as meeting the minimum criteria of ASTM C1184.
Which colors do you stock, and does it depend on the size?
Yes, it depends on the size. Across Dymonic 100, Vulkem 116, Spectrem 1 and Spectrem 2 the stocked colors include White, Precast White, Gray, Black, Limestone, Aluminum Stone, Bronze, Beige and Stone, but no line carries the same set in both the 10 oz cartridge and the 20 oz sausage. Tremco’s full standard range is wider than what is on the shelf, and custom matching exists for project quantities. Use the filters above or call with the color name from the specification.
How is Willseal ordered?
By the joint, not by the box. Willseal seals are pre-compressed foam supplied sized to a joint-width range, with adhesive on one face, and they expand into the opening without anchors. Send the joint width range, the total length and whether the joint is vertical, horizontal, traffic-bearing, fire-rated or in a public area that needs the pick-resistant version, and we will quote the right product and size.
