Tremco Vulkem 445SSL Neutral Base 1.5 Gallon Pail

Tremco Vulkem 445SSL is a field-tintable, semi-self-leveling, multi-component, moisture-curing polyurethane sealant that includes a tintable base and a choice of 70 standard colors. This listing is the neutral base: the 1.5 gal kit requires a separate color pak (pigment), mixed in per Tremco’s Technical Bulletin on Vulkem 445SSL until there are no color striations. It is intended for expansion joints in sidewalks, swimming pool decks, plazas, floors and other horizontal surfaces with slopes up to 6% (a 1 ft rise for every 16 ft run). It is traffic rated, pourable and jet fuel resistant, can be applied to damp and green concrete, will not outgas, and is suitable for continuous immersion in non-chlorinated water. It typically adheres to concrete and stone without primers; Tremco always recommends a mock-up or field adhesion test on the actual job materials. Do not apply it over contaminated surfaces or use it in immersed conditions that contain chlorinated water, and use with adequate ventilation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Vulkem 445SSL Neutral Base need a color pak?
Yes. Tremco supplies Vulkem 445SSL as 1.5 gal kits that require a separate color pak (pigment), tinted to your choice of 70 standard colors or custom matched on request. Mix the pak in per the Technical Bulletin on Vulkem 445SSL and continue mixing until there are no color striations. Universal Color Paks are listed separately.

Where can Vulkem 445SSL be used?
It is intended for expansion joints in sidewalks, swimming pool decks, plazas, floors and other horizontal surfaces with slopes up to 6% (a 1 ft rise for every 16 ft run). Do not use it in immersed conditions that contain chlorinated water.

Can it be applied to damp or green concrete?
Yes. It can go on green concrete 24 hr after the forms are removed, once concrete sealers or curing agents have been removed by grinding. The concrete can be damp, but do not apply it where there is standing water in or close to the joints; Tremco recommends catalyzing with water on damp surfaces.

Does Vulkem 445SSL need a primer?
It typically adheres to concrete and stone without primers, but Tremco always recommends a mock-up or field adhesion test on the job materials (ASTM C1193, appendix X1). Where needed, Tremco names Vulkem Primer #191 Low VOC QD for porous surfaces and TREMprime Non-Porous Primer for metals.

How should the joint be sized?
Joint width should be 4 times the anticipated movement and not less than 1/4 in (6 mm). Sealant depth may equal the width for joints under 1/2 in wide; for joints 1/2 in to 1 in (13 mm to 25 mm) wide, depth is about one-half the width, with a maximum depth of 1/2 in (13 mm). For joints wider than 1 in, contact Tremco. Coverage is 308 linear feet per gal for 1/4 in x 1/4 in joints.

How long does Vulkem 445SSL take to cure?
At 75 °F (23.9 °C) and 50% RH a skin forms within 5 hr, and curing continues at about 1/16 in (1.6 mm) depth per day. Cure slows as temperature and humidity drop: allow about one additional day for every 10 °F decrease. Tremco covers water activation of pails in Technical Bulletin No. S-17-01.
