Concrete Patching

Concrete patching compounds rebuild spalls, holes, broken edges and worn surfaces on floors, slabs, walls, columns, precast and pavement. Shop rapid-setting cement patch, vertical and overhead repair mortar, thin-section and finishing mortars, epoxy floor patch and underwater repair mortar. Match the exact product to the repair depth, surface orientation, traffic, temperature and the time you have before the area returns to service.

Choose a concrete patch by the repair

Start with where the repair sits and how deep it is. Horizontal traffic repairs, vertical and overhead work, thin resurfacing, epoxy floor repair and underwater placement each call for a different kind of patching compound. Then check temperature, return-to-service time and the project specification.

Repair or product typeWhat to confirmExamples in this category
Rapid horizontal repair for slabs, floors and pavementMinimum depth, maximum depth per lift, extension with pea gravel, traffic timing and ambient temperature. Several list a 1/2 in minimum depth and must not be featheredged.SikaQuick 800, Dayton Pave Patch 3000, Dayton HD 50, Euclid Euco-Speed
Thin patching, toppings and resurfacingWhether the product is published for featheredge work, its maximum thickness, whether it is interior or exterior, and the traffic it is rated for. Thin toppings usually need a specific primer or scrub coat.SikaQuick EZ Patch, Euclid Thin-Top Supreme, Tamms Thin Patch, Dayton Thin Resurfacer, Euco Re-Cover
Vertical and overhead trowel repairNon-sag build per lift overhead and on walls, set time, whether the mortar can be shaved to profile, and exposure. Several of these are not intended for horizontal toppings.Dayton Recrete 20 Minute, Dayton Polyfast FS, Dayton Perma Patch VO, Dayton HD 25 VO, Speed Crete Red Line, Eucopatch
Cosmetic finishing on walls, precast and tilt-upFeatheredge capability, maximum build and whether the surface will be sanded or painted. These are finishing mortars, not structural repair for deep spalls.SikaQuick Smooth Finish, Dayton Architectural Finish
Epoxy floor and edge repairImpact, chemical exposure and how quickly the floor must reopen. Check placement thickness, substrate moisture guidance and whether a color pack or topcoat is needed.Stratarock High Build Repair, Euclid Duralflex Fastpatch
Underwater and below-grade repairUse a product published for underwater placement. Speed Crete Blue Line sets in minutes, places from 3/4 in to 3 in per lift and should be mixed no more than one unit at a time.Euclid Speed Crete Blue Line
Floor leveling and bonding (also listed here)Self-leveling underlayments are interior leveling products, not patching mortars for exterior or traffic repairs. Duralprep AC is a bonding and reinforcing-steel coating used before placing repair mortar.Dayton LeveLayer, Dayton Econolevel, Euclid Duralprep AC

Published depth, set and strength values apply only at the stated temperature, water content and test method. Check the current product datasheet before approving a substitution.

Field planning

Plan the concrete patch repair

A patch lasts when the product suits the repair and the substrate is prepared to receive it. Use the manufacturer instructions with the project specification and ICRI guidance.

Floors, docks, ramps and pavement

Horizontal repairs under foot, forklift or vehicle traffic need a mortar rated for that traffic and a depth the product supports. Rapid-setting products such as SikaQuick 800 and Pave Patch 3000 are published for highways, parking structures, warehouse floors and loading docks.

Where impact, chemicals or joint edges are the problem, compare epoxy patching such as Stratarock High Build Repair or Duralflex Fastpatch. Re-establish floor joints after patching across them.

Walls, columns, soffits and precast

Vertical and overhead repairs depend on non-sag build per lift. Non-sag mortars such as Recrete 20 Minute, Polyfast FS and Perma Patch VO are placed in lifts of up to 2 in; deeper repairs are built in successive lifts or formed.

For smoothing honeycomb, bug holes and form marks before paint, use a finishing mortar such as SikaQuick Smooth Finish or Architectural Finish rather than a structural repair mortar.

Depth, featheredge and extension

Minimum and maximum thickness separate these products more than any other property. Many cement repair mortars must not be featheredged, while thin patches and resurfacers are made for it but stop at 1/2 in or 1 in.

Beyond the neat maximum, several products allow extension with clean 3/8 in pea gravel at a published rate. Extension changes the yield, so plan the takeoff with the extended figure.

Preparation, bonding and curing

Most sheets call for sound concrete, removal of contaminants, a mechanically roughened profile and a saturated-surface-dry substrate, with a scrub coat or specified bonding agent. Clean exposed reinforcing steel before placement.

Curing requirements differ: some products are moist cured, some need a curing compound and some ask you to avoid one. Follow the product's own curing and cold- or hot-weather instructions.

Before you order

Concrete patch depth & quantity planning

Confirm the depth, quantity and documents for the repair before you order, especially when the area must reopen on a set schedule.

Match the depth range

Measure the shallowest and deepest points of each repair. Choose a product whose published minimum and per-lift maximum cover both, or plan lifts and pea-gravel extension where the datasheet allows it.

Calculate bags and yield

Add up the repair volume, include an allowance for profile and waste, divide by the published yield of the exact unit and round up. Bag and pail yields differ between products, and extended yields differ again.

Check timing and the submittal

Confirm the placement temperature range, set time and traffic timing for the forecast. Identify the manufacturer, product, unit size and SKU, and gather the current datasheet, SDS and any required compliance documents.

Concrete patching questions

What is a concrete patching compound?

It is a prepackaged repair material, usually cement based and mixed with water, or a multi-component epoxy, used to rebuild damaged concrete. Products differ in depth range, set time, orientation and traffic rating, so the right one depends on the repair.

Which concrete patch works on vertical or overhead surfaces?

Use a non-sag mortar published for vertical and overhead work, such as Recrete 20 Minute, Polyfast FS, Perma Patch VO, HD 25 VO or Speed Crete Red Line. Place it in lifts no deeper than the datasheet allows.

Can concrete patch be featheredged?

Only when the product is published for it. Thin patches and finishing mortars such as SikaQuick EZ Patch, Tamms Thin Patch and SikaQuick Smooth Finish are made for featheredge work. Many rapid repair mortars, including SikaQuick 800 and Pave Patch 3000, must not be featheredged.

Should I use a cement or epoxy concrete patch?

Cement-based patches suit most slab, wall and pavement repairs and are compatible with the surrounding concrete. Epoxy patches are chosen where impact, chemicals or a fast return to service matter more, such as industrial floors and joint edges. Check each product's thickness and substrate guidance.

Can concrete be patched underwater?

Yes, with a product formulated for it. Speed Crete Blue Line is published for underwater and below-grade repairs such as piers, seawalls and pipe. Ordinary repair mortar is not an underwater product.

How many bags of concrete patch do I need?

Calculate the repair volume, add a reasonable allowance, divide by the published yield of the exact product and round up. Yields vary by product and unit, and extending with pea gravel increases the yield per bag.
