Choose a Newborn applicator by package

Start with how the material is packaged: a single-component cartridge, a sausage pack, a pail for bulk loading, or a two-part cartridge with a fixed mix ratio. Then match the thrust or air power to the viscosity, temperature and volume of the job.

Package or materialWhat to confirmNewborn models stocked
10 oz and quart cartridgesCartridge size (10 oz or 29 oz quart) and the sealant's viscosity. 18:1 guns handle most polyurethanes, hybrids and construction adhesives; 26:1 is for stiff or cold material. A revolving frame keeps the bead oriented around corners.Newborn 250 (18:1, 10 oz), 373-XSP (26:1, 10 oz), Newborn 255 (18:1, quart), 377 X-Tender (extended reach, quart), 101 EZ Thrust (light duty, 10 oz)
Sausage packs and bulk loadingSausage size (10, 20 or 30 oz) against the barrel, and whether the crew loads bulk material from pails. Bulk barrels trade thrust for volume, so match the thrust to the material.420AL (aluminum barrel, 10 and 20 oz sausage), 624-GTS (24 oz bulk, adjustable thrust), Newborn 224 (24 oz, 7:1), Newborn 232 (32 oz bulk, 10 to 30 oz sausage, 7:1)
Co-axial two-part cartridgesCo-axial packs place one component inside the other. Confirm the pack size and its mix ratio; the gun is built for a specific co-axial format.Newborn 380 (18:1, 10:1 and 4:1 packs), Newborn 385 (18:1, 5:1 packs, including co-axial firestop foam)
Side-by-side two-part cartridges, manualBoth cartridge volumes and the mix ratio printed on the pack. Snap-in push disks convert XSP models between sizes and ratios without disassembly. Common for polyurea and epoxy joint fillers, crack repair and anchoring adhesives.535-XSP (26:1, 300 × 300 ml down to 150 × 75 ml, 1:1 and 2:1), 655-XSP (26:1, 600 × 600 ml, 1:1 and 2:1), 750-XSP (26:1, 750 × 75 ml, 10:1)

Pneumatic, two-part cartridgesCartridge sizes, mix ratio and material viscosity. Newborn rates the 2-1/2 in cylinder at 490 lb nominal thrust and the 4 in cylinder at 1,100 lb, both at 100 psi. The sealant or adhesive manufacturer's data sheet sets the dispensing requirement. Check its package size, mix ratio and any dispenser recommendation before choosing a gun.

Field planning

Thrust ratio, capacity and air power

Most dispensing problems come from a mismatch between the gun and the material: too little thrust for a stiff sealant, the wrong push disk for a two-part pack, or a manual gun on a job that runs hundreds of feet a day.

Thrust ratio and viscosity

Thrust ratio is the mechanical advantage of the trigger. Low ratios, such as the 7:1 bulk guns, suit thinner material in larger volumes. 18:1 covers most polyurethane, hybrid and adhesive cartridges. 26:1 is for high-viscosity, cold or two-part material.

Higher thrust reduces hand effort but moves less material per squeeze. The 624-GTS lets the operator switch thrust on the same gun.

Cartridge, sausage or bulk

Cartridges are the simplest to carry and store. Sausage packs cut waste and leave less trash on large joint runs. Bulk barrels load directly from pails and suit high-footage joint sealing.

Quart (29 oz) cartridge guns such as the 255 and 377 X-Tender reduce changeovers on long runs without moving to sausage or bulk.

Two-part mix ratios and push disks

A dual cartridge gun has to advance both pistons at the ratio of the pack. Newborn XSP models use snap-in push disks and a stabilizer plate to change between cartridge sizes and 1:1 or 2:1 ratios.

Co-axial packs need a co-axial gun, and 10:1 side-by-side packs such as 750 × 75 ml need a gun built for that ratio.

When pneumatic pays off

Air-powered guns deliver steady flow with less operator fatigue on production work. Every Newborn pneumatic model here runs at up to 100 psi with a regulator and a dump valve.

The 4 in cylinder on the 850 series and VR400A85 is for large two-part cartridges and heavy material. Confirm the air supply and fittings on site.

Before you order

Match the gun to the material

Three checks from the sealant or adhesive data sheet settle most orders.

Confirm the package

Cartridge size in ounces or milliliters, sausage size, or pail for bulk loading. For two-part material, note both cartridge volumes and whether the pack is side-by-side or co-axial.

Confirm the ratio

Two-part packs dispense at a fixed ratio such as 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 5:1 or 10:1. Choose a gun and push disks built for that ratio, and order static mixers from the material manufacturer.

Confirm the power

Check viscosity, placement temperature and daily footage. Step up in thrust for stiff or cold material, and consider pneumatic for production runs where compressed air is on site.

Newborn caulk gun questions

What thrust ratio caulk gun do I need?

Match it to the material. 7:1 bulk guns suit thinner sealants in volume, 18:1 guns such as the Newborn 250 and 255 handle most polyurethane, hybrid and adhesive cartridges, and 26:1 guns such as the 373-XSP and the XSP dual cartridge models are for high-viscosity, cold or two-part material. Follow any dispenser guidance on the sealant data sheet.

Which Newborn gun takes 20 oz sausage packs?

The 420AL takes 10 and 20 oz sausages, the 624-GTS takes 10 to 20 oz sausages or 24 oz bulk, and the 232 takes 10 to 30 oz sausages or 32 oz bulk. For air-powered work, the 710AL-20 takes 10 and 20 oz sausages at up to 100 psi.

Can one gun dispense 1:1 and 2:1 dual cartridges?

Yes. The 535-XSP uses snap-in push disks to change between 300 ml and 150 ml cartridges at 1:1 or 2:1, and the 655-XSP handles 600 × 600 ml packs at 1:1 or 2:1. The 830A30 pneumatic converts between sizes the same way. A 10:1 pack needs a 10:1 gun such as the 750-XSP or a VR model.

What is the difference between the 830 and 850 pneumatic applicators?

Cylinder size. Newborn rates the 830 series 2-1/2 in cylinder at 490 lb nominal thrust and the 850 series 4 in cylinder at 1,100 lb, both at 100 psi. The 850A75 takes 750 ml two-part cartridges; the 830A15, 830A30 and 850A30 cover 150 ml and 300 ml sizes.

Which Newborn gun is used for co-axial firestop foam?

The Newborn 385 is built for 5:1 co-axial packs, including co-axial firestop foam. The Newborn 380 takes 10:1 and 4:1 co-axial packs. Confirm the pack's mix ratio against the gun before ordering.

Should I choose a manual or pneumatic caulk gun?

Manual guns suit most punch-list, glazing and repair work and need no air. Pneumatic guns suit production joint sealing and two-part work where steady flow and lower fatigue matter, and require compressed air at up to 100 psi on site.
