WR Meadows HYDRALASTIC 836 SL is a two-component, cold-applied, high-solids, water-activated, self-leveling waterproofing membrane, supplied in a 5 gallon pail. It is intended for plaza decks, elevated composite decks and split-slab waterproofing, above or below grade.
WR Meadows HYDRALASTIC 836 SL (part of the hydralastic 836 line) is a two-component, cold-applied, high-solids, water-activated waterproofing system for horizontal and vertical surfaces. Up to one quart of potable water is mixed into each 5 gallon pail, which gives an initial cure in about 2 hours at 75 F (23.9 C) and 50% RH, so a second coat can go on the same day. It is self-leveling behind a notched squeegee, does not shrink, will not crack in extreme cold or flow from softening at high temperatures, and can go on green concrete. It is intended for interior or exterior concrete above or below grade, such as plaza decks, elevated composite decks and split slabs. It is not compatible with asphalt, polymeric-based products or asphaltic membranes, is not an exposed or wearing surface, and contains isocyanates.

Product documents: WR Meadows HYDRALASTIC 836 SL Data Sheet (PDF)
How much area does a 5 gallon pail of WR Meadows HYDRALASTIC 836 SL cover?
Per gallon, the data sheet gives about 26 sq ft at 60 mils dry, 17.5 sq ft at 90 mils and 13 sq ft at 120 mils. A 5 gallon pail covers about 130 sq ft at 60 mils, about 87.5 sq ft at 90 mils or about 65 sq ft at 120 mils.
How is it mixed with water?
Mix the material first, then add one quart of potable water per 5 gallon pail (20 parts to one part by volume) and mix for three minutes at slow speed with a Jiffy-type paint mixer, not a mud or mortar mixer. Avoid trapping air and do not mix up and down. Place it on the substrate right away; do not leave it in the mixing container.
How long do I have to work it, and when can I recoat?
Working time is 20 minutes at 75 F (23.9 C) once water is added, and initial cure is about 2 hours. Recoat in 2-4 hours, no more than 24 hours apart. For next-day work, wipe a 6-8 Inch tie-in area with acetone, mineral spirits or xylene, not alcohol. If more than 48 hours have passed, an epoxy prime coat is needed per the WR Meadows Priming Installation Guideline.
How should the surface be prepared?
It is intended for concrete, metal and wood. Abrade concrete to ICRI CSP 3-5 by grinding, abrasive blasting or shot blasting; it must be structurally sound, at least 3000 psi, thoroughly dry and free of oil, grease, dust and laitance. Metal must be primed. Stripe coat cracks up to 1/16 Inch and caulk wider cracks. Install a 100-200 sq ft mockup before full installation.
How is it used on plaza decks and vertical surfaces?
For plaza decks, podiums and similar horizontal work, the data sheet recommends a 60 mil layer with REINFORCING FABRIC HCR embedded while the membrane is wet, usually within 20 minutes of mixing at 75 F, following the High Build Reinforced System guidelines. On vertical surfaces, build up in passes of up to 15 mils until reaching 60 mils or the specified thickness.
What are the limitations?
Do not leave it exposed to exterior UV for more than 14 days; protect it with MEL-DRAIN (polymeric backing film type) once it can be walked on. It is not a liner for water-containing structures or a wearing surface, is not for surfaces to be painted, and is not compatible with asphalt, polymeric-based products or asphaltic membranes. Do not use it over magnesite, gypsum or lightweight concrete, and do not apply it when the substrate is above 90 F. Minimum application temperature is above 30 F and rising. It contains isocyanates.
