What penetrations is SpecSeal SSB24 sized to firestop?
SSB Firestop Pillows are designed for medium to large openings with pipes, conduits, cables, insulated metal pipes, bus ducts, and HVAC ducts. The PDS calls out data, communications, power, and control cables, innerducts, and cable trays as especially good fits, plus one-sided shaft-wall work and other installs where access is limited to one side of the assembly.
How do crews install the 2 x 4 x 9 in SSB24 pillows?
Compress and stack the pillows into the opening in a brick-like fashion to the compression range named on the PDS (25% to 33% as installed). Follow the published UL or FM system for packing depth, wire mesh, and putty. No special tools are required beyond the mesh or putty the design may call for. Do not use damaged pillows whose poly bag is torn.
Can SSB24 pillows be removed and reinstalled for cable changes?
Yes. The PDS retrofit notes say cables may be added or replaced by removing mesh when present, then removing and replacing pillows as required. Do not weave cables through wire mesh. After cable work, reinstall pillows and putty as required and replace the mesh. If pillows are too thin from excess handling, replace them or add new pillows so the seal still applies pressure.
What fire ratings do SpecSeal SSB pillows support?
SSB Pillows are the basis for systems tested to ASTM E814 (UL1479) and CAN/ULC-S115, plus the time-temperature curve of ASTM E119 (UL263). Tested systems provide up to a 4-hour rating for penetrations through gypsum board, concrete, CMU, or concrete tilt-up walls, as well as concrete or concrete-over-steel-deck floors, with additional systems up to 3 hours in gypsum board walls. Follow the published design.
What temperature and storage limits apply to SSB24?
In-service temperature and storage temperature are both less than 130 F (54 C). Shelf life has no limit when the poly bag stays intact. VOC content is 0.0 g/L. STC is 60 on a specific construction. Air leakage for properly installed pillows is less than 1 CFM per sq ft at ambient and elevated temperature tests named on the PDS.
