Choose by placement method and repair conditions

A mortar that flows into a floor patch may need formwork on a wall. A material designed to stay in place overhead has different handling and lift limits. Start with the repair geometry and project specification, then compare working time, strength development and curing.

Form-and-pour repairs

Formwork contains flowable materials when rebuilding deeper sections, equipment foundations, beams and other concrete members. Eucocrete Supreme is preblended with pea gravel and has a longer setting profile than the rapid-hardening examples.

Confirm: depth, access around reinforcement, form tightness, placement equipment and curing. Formed vertical or overhead use does not mean unsupported hand application.

Vertical & overhead hand repairs

Use a mortar intended for troweling onto walls, columns, soffits and the underside of concrete members. SikaQuick VOH and Five Star Structural Concrete V/O are rapid-setting examples.

Confirm: permitted thickness per lift, treatment between lifts, substrate preparation, reinforcement condition and the time available to place each batch.

Epoxy repair mortar

Resin-and-aggregate systems include industrial floor repairs exposed to abrasion, impact or chemicals. Stratarock Epoxy Patch Mortar is a three-component troweled system.

Confirm: specific chemicals and exposure conditions, repair depth, substrate moisture and temperature, complete kit yield, and any protective coating requirements.

Floors, loading docks & traffic

Match the repair to the service it will see: pedestrians, vehicles, warehouse traffic or industrial operations. Repairing a slab edge also requires retaining the intended joint detail.

SikaQuick-1000 and VersaSpeed LS100 offer rapid hardening with more working time than some faster-setting materials. Their traffic and coating instructions use different conditions and timing; plan the shutdown around the selected product.

Deep sections & equipment foundations

Depth changes the material requirement and the placement plan. Five Star Structural Concrete's current datasheet specifies ½–2 inches neat and aggregate extension for deeper placements. Eucocrete Supreme starts at 1 inch, with added aggregate for repairs over 6 inches.

Confirm the aggregate, mixing equipment, formwork and curing before ordering. Where grout will support equipment above the repair, coordinate the repair and grout installation requirements.

Walls, columns & overhead concrete

Choose a mortar that can remain in place at the required orientation and thickness. SikaQuick VOH lists up to 3 inches vertically or 2 inches overhead per layer, subject to its application conditions.

Five Star Structural Concrete V/O calls for a ¼-inch minimum repair depth and manufacturer guidance for multiple lifts. Do not transfer one product's build thickness to another.

Reinforcement & service exposure

Parking structures, industrial plants and exposed concrete may involve corrosion, freeze/thaw cycles, deicing salts or chemicals. Assess the damaged concrete and exposed steel, then select a compatible repair system.

A corrosion inhibitor does not replace concrete removal or reinforcement preparation. For chemical exposure, identify the substance, concentration, temperature and contact conditions before selecting a repair mortar or coating.

Before you order

Repair specifications & quantity planning

Use the actual repair dimensions and the manufacturer's installation requirements to prepare the takeoff and submittal.

Check the whole specification

Review bond, shrinkage, stiffness and exposure performance alongside strength. Keep the test method, curing age and conditions with any comparison. Confirm the required repair depth, surface profile, bonding method and curing procedure.

Calculate by mixed yield

Volume in cubic feet = length in feet × width in feet × average depth in inches ÷ 12. Add an allowance for profile, irregular edges and waste, divide by the selected bag or kit's mixed yield, and round up.

Bag weight is not yield. Aggregate extension changes both the material order and the published yield; use the approved mix for your depth.

Plan placement and reopening

Working time, set time, traffic access and coating readiness are separate milestones. Check temperature, batch size and cure requirements. Coordinate surface preparation, mixing, placement and protection with the crew and shutdown schedule.

Concrete repair mortar terms explained

Use these definitions to interpret repair mortar descriptions and compare the material, placement method and performance information in a project specification.

Cementitious repair mortar
A repair material with a cement-based binder that hardens through reaction with water. The formulation may also contain polymers, fibers and other additives. The term alone does not specify repair depth, placement direction or reopening time.
Polymer-modified mortar
A cementitious mortar containing polymers to modify properties such as adhesion and workability. The polymer may be included in the dry mix or supplied as a separate liquid component. Use the manufacturer's specified mixing system.
Rapid-setting vs. rapid-hardening
Rapid-setting describes fast stiffening and loss of plasticity. Rapid-hardening describes early strength development. A product can have both properties, but neither term establishes a universal time for traffic, loading or coatings.
Working time
The usable period for handling and placing mixed material under stated conditions. Check whether the manufacturer's time allowance includes mixing and finishing. Temperature affects this window, so use the application instructions when planning batch size and crew work.
Form-and-pour
A placement method that uses forms to contain a flowable repair material while it sets. It can suit deeper or formed sections where permitted. Approval for formed vertical repairs does not mean the material can be hand-applied without support.
Vertical & overhead repair mortar
A mortar formulated to remain in place on upright or downward-facing concrete during the permitted application method. Compare the allowed thickness per layer and requirements between layers; vertical and overhead limits may differ.
Neat vs. aggregate-extended
For packaged repair mortars, neat means using the supplied mix without adding extra aggregate. An aggregate-extended mix includes the manufacturer's specified additional aggregate, often for deeper placements. Extension changes the mix proportions and yield; follow the product's permitted depth range.
Mixed yield
The volume of usable material produced by a bag or kit when mixed as directed, commonly stated in cubic feet. Coverage is the area that volume fills at a chosen depth. Compare yield for the intended mix, then allow for waste and irregular repairs.

Concrete repair mortar questions

Can I use a horizontal repair mortar on a wall or overhead?

Only when the manufacturer permits that application and the placement method is suitable. A form-and-pour product needs forms to contain it. For unsupported hand repairs, select a vertical and overhead mortar and follow its layer thickness and curing instructions.

When does a repair mortar need added aggregate?

Follow the exact product's depth and extension instructions. The current Five Star Structural Concrete sheet requires extension above 2 inches, while Eucocrete Supreme calls for added aggregate above 6 inches. SikaQuick-1000 also has specific extension directions for repairs greater than 1 inch. Aggregate type, quantity and mixed yield are product-specific.

Can these mortars feather to a thin edge?

Do not assume they can. The reviewed products specify minimum repair depths. Prepare the perimeter and substrate to suit the selected material; a thin resurfacing or pore-filling application may need a different product from the range.

Does rapid setting mean the repair can take traffic immediately?

No. Set time describes stiffening, while reopening depends on the manufacturer's traffic instructions, achieved properties and site conditions. For example, VersaSpeed LS100's standard tire traffic statement is timed from final set. Heavy equipment, coating and loading requirements must be checked separately.

Do all 50 lb bags cover the same repair area?

No. Published mixed yields vary, even at the same bag weight. Repair depth and permitted aggregate extension also change coverage. Use the selected product's yield and the quantity planning method above.
