WR Meadows VIBRAFLEX Bridge Deck Protection Course 1/2 Inch x 4 ft x 8 ft Panel

WR Meadows VIBRAFLEX (often searched as vibraflex) is an asphaltic panel bridge deck protection course: a multi-ply, semi-rigid panel with a mineral-fortified asphalt core between one liner of asphalt-saturated felt and one layer of fiberglass. One liner is weather-coated and has a polyethylene film facing. WR Meadows developed it with railroads, and it is intended to take the forces that would otherwise damage the waterproofing membrane under ballast. The weather-coated face lets the ballast penetrate in a controlled way, seating and locking the panel to the ballast. It works with most built-up dampproofing and waterproofing membranes, including liquid membranes and sheet membranes of EPDM, butyl, neoprene rubber and polyvinylchloride, on concrete, wood, steel, and pre-stressed or precast concrete structures, in new and remedial work. Panels go on dry in two layers with staggered butt joints, so no hot-mopping or cold-bitumen adhesive is needed.

Key Features

  • Mineral-fortified asphalt core between asphalt-saturated felt and fiberglass
  • 4 ft x 8 ft panels give fewer joints than plank-type products
  • Dry, dual-layer installation with no adhesives
  • Weather-coated face for controlled ballast penetration
  • Shipped with anti-stick polyethylene sheets between panels

Applications

  • Railroad bridge deck membrane protection under ballast
  • Protection over liquid, EPDM, butyl, neoprene and PVC membranes
  • Concrete, wood, steel, pre-stressed and precast structures
  • New and remedial waterproofing work

Frequently Asked Questions

How is WR Meadows VIBRAFLEX installed?
In two layers. Lay the first layer dry directly on the waterproofing membrane, each panel butted tightly to the next. Lay the second layer with the butt joints staggered on a half-sheet module so they do not line up with the joints below. Run the long dimension of the panels parallel to the composite slabs and structural members. Panels cut with a sharp roofer's knife.

Does VIBRAFLEX need adhesive?
No. When the panels go on in the dual-layer method, no adhesives are required, and there is no hot-mopping or cold-bitumen adhesive.

How much area does a panel cover?
Each 4 ft x 8 ft panel is 32 sq ft. Because VIBRAFLEX goes on in two full layers, each panel provides about 16 sq ft of finished two-layer protection. This 1/2 Inch panel weighs 350 lb (158.76 kg) per 100 sq ft, or about 112 lb per panel.

Which membranes can VIBRAFLEX protect?
It may be used with most built-up dampproofing and waterproofing membranes, including liquid membranes, sheet membranes of EPDM, butyl, neoprene rubber and polyvinylchloride, and built-up systems. Do not place it over liquid membranes that contain volatile solvents until all of the solvent has evaporated.

Can VIBRAFLEX be left exposed?
Where VIBRAFLEX will be left exposed to sunlight, it must be protected with an application of aluminum-fibred roof coating. Keep panels stacked on pallets or on a smooth surface before use to prevent deformation.

Why are the joints staggered?
Over time, ballast movement, vibration and water carry fines down to where the ballast meets VIBRAFLEX, and a crust-like layer forms. With the joints staggered, only half the joint area is present at any one point, so the fines do not work through the full thickness and the membrane below stays intact.
