WR Meadows MEL-DEK Deck Waterproofing Membrane 38.5 Inch x 60 ft Roll

WR Meadows MEL-DEK is a 65 mil roll-type waterproofing membrane made of a polymeric waterproofing membrane on a shrink-resistant, heavy-duty polypropylene woven carrier fabric, laminated together under controlled production. It is intended for bridges, parking decks and other vehicular traffic structures that will be overlaid with an asphalt concrete wearing course, in repair, maintenance or new construction. It needs no protection course and withstands the dynamic placement of hot asphalt overlays, and its 3/4 inch membrane-to-membrane weld at seams gives monolithic protection. This roll is 38.5 inches (0.98 m) wide by 60 ft (18.29 m) long and gives 180 sq ft of net waterproofing coverage.

Key Features

  • Requires no protection course; withstands the dynamic placement of hot asphalt overlays
  • 3/4 inch (19.1 mm) membrane-to-membrane weld at seams
  • Meets ASTM D6153, Type III
  • Puncture resistance of 243 lbf (ASTM E154)
  • No cracking on a 180 degree bend at -15 F (ASTM D146)

Applications

  • Bridge decks receiving an asphalt concrete overlay
  • Parking decks receiving an asphalt wearing course
  • Other vehicular traffic structures overlaid with asphalt concrete
  • Repair, maintenance and new construction projects

Frequently Asked Questions

What is WR Meadows MEL-DEK used for?
MEL-DEK is a deck waterproofing membrane for bridges, parking decks and other vehicular traffic structures that receive an asphalt concrete wearing course. It suits repair, maintenance and new construction. For overlays other than asphalt, WR Meadows asks that you consult its Technical Service first.

How much area does one roll of MEL-DEK cover?
One 38.5 inch by 60 ft roll gives 180 sq ft of net waterproofing coverage, or 192.5 sq ft gross. Where a membrane of 125 mils or more is wanted, each roll is overlapped 51%.

How is MEL-DEK installed?
Prime all surfaces with MEL-PRIME, MEL-PRIME N.E. or MEL-PRIME W/B and let it dry tack-free; re-prime areas not covered within 24 hours. Put a DETAIL STRIP over nonworking joints or cracks wider than 3/16 inch. Lay MEL-DEK from the low point to the high point: transverse laps overlap 2 1/2 inches in shingle fashion after the white polyethylene strip is removed to expose the 3/4 inch rubberized asphalt weld, and longitudinal laps overlap 6 inches and are sealed with POINTING MASTIC. Hand-rub the membrane down, roll the whole surface with pressure, and seal all terminations with POINTING MASTIC.

What are the temperature and paving requirements?
Install in fair weather with air and concrete surface temperatures of 40 F (4 C) and higher. Place the asphalt overlay as soon as possible, at a minimum 2 inch compacted thickness, with the asphalt at 290 F to 340 F at compaction, using rubber tire paving equipment. An asphalt emulsion, water-based tack coat on the membrane gives a stronger bond to the overlay.
