WR Meadows DECK-O-SHIELD PLUS 5 Gallon Pail

WR Meadows DECK-O-SHIELD PLUS is a ready-to-use, water-based sealer intended for natural stone and other porous surfaces such as concrete, pavers and grout. It is intended for pool copings and decks, where it helps protect against salt penetration and the spalling and pitting it causes, as well as surface damage from freeze-thaw cycles. It penetrates rather than forming a film, so the color and tint of the surface are not altered. For denser surfaces, the data sheet points to DECK-O-SHIELD instead. It is a water repellent, not a waterproofing or vapor barrier.

Key Features

  • Not film-forming; penetrates to form an integral barrier to moisture penetration
  • High solids content; one-coat application on most surfaces
  • Transparent and non-staining; surface appearance virtually unchanged after drying
  • Helps protect against efflorescence, rust staining and salt "whitening"; spill and wipe protection from stains
  • One component, water-based; treated surface is USDA accepted

Applications

  • Pool copings and decks exposed to salt water
  • Porches, patios and walkways around pools
  • Natural stone, mortar joints, concrete, brick, concrete block and stucco
  • Porous pavers and grout

Frequently Asked Questions

What is WR Meadows DECK-O-SHIELD PLUS used for?
It seals natural stone and other porous surfaces such as concrete, pavers and grout, and is intended for pool copings and decks. It helps protect against spalling and pitting from salt penetration and against surface damage from freeze-thaw cycles.

How much area does a 5 gallon pail of DECK-O-SHIELD PLUS cover?
The data sheet gives 300-475 sq ft/gal, so a 5 gallon pail covers about 1,500-2,375 sq ft. The rate varies with the porosity of the substrate, and porous substrates may need two coats.

How does DECK-O-SHIELD PLUS go on?
Use a low-pressure airless sprayer such as a Chapin 1949 at a 0.1 GPM spray rate, a paint roller or a brush, letting it flood the surface. Roll or brush out puddles and do not let it puddle or dry on the surface. After 10-15 minutes, wipe the whole surface with a clean, dry cloth to remove all excess. If two coats are needed, put the second on before the first fully dries.

Is DECK-O-SHIELD PLUS VOC compliant everywhere?
The data sheet lists a VOC content of 254 g/L and compliance with U.S. EPA, LADCO and OTC VOC regulations. It does not list SCAQMD or CARB, so check local VOC rules before using it in those areas.

Can DECK-O-SHIELD PLUS be coated or caulked over?
Treated surfaces may prevent adhesion of later coatings, and it should not be used on surfaces that will receive caulks or sealants. Going over fully cured elastomeric sealants typically will not affect them. Test a small patch first.

What are the temperature and weather limits?
Surface and air temperature should be 40-95 F (4-35 C) during application and for eight hours after. Do not freeze or dilute the product. Protect treated surfaces from rain for six hours; many surfaces need several days to develop full water repellency.
