SpecSeal SSS100 Triple-S Intumescent Sealant seals through-penetrations as well as construction gaps and blank openings. The SSS PDS names metallic pipes including steel, iron, or copper pipe and tubing up to 36 in (914 mm) trade size; nonmetallic PVC, CPVC, PVDF, PEX, PEX-AL-PEX, ABS, and PB; cable, cable trays, and bus duct; HVAC ductwork; insulated pipes; and multi-service penetrations including AC line sets plus electrical, telephone, or TV service. It is also used with SpecSeal Firestop Collars and Wrap Strips when the design requires that pairing, including complete wood-floor packages for electrical, plumbing, HVAC, TV, and telephone.
How do crews apply the 10.1 oz SSS100 cartridge on walls and overhead?
SSS is a single-component, multi-viscosity sealant that may be pumped, caulked from a standard cartridge or bulk loaded, knifed, or troweled. The PDS calls out excellent caulking properties and high-build properties on vertical or overhead surfaces. Apply between 35 F and 100 F (2 C to 38 C). Wear site PPE and follow the Safety Data Sheet. Product contains water and is conductive until dry.
Which SSS packs appear on the PDS besides the live 10.1 oz cartridge?
SpecSeal SSS100 is the only SSS size currently live on Indcon (10.1 oz tube / 300 ml). The preferred Indcon amfile PDS (ZSFOD5001 25192) also lists SSS129 29 oz tube, SSS120 20 oz sausage, and SSS105 5 gallon pail; those sizes are not currently live on Indcon. An older STI web PDS also listed SSS102 2 gallon pail, which is absent from the amfile ordering table. Chemistry is the same red two-stage intumescent latex across catalog numbers.
What happens to SSS100 when fire hits the sealant?
SSS features STI patented two-stage intumescent technology that expands aggressively in a highly directionalized fashion. Free expansion is a minimum of 8 times original volume. Expansion begins at 230 F (110 C) in the first stage and 350 F (177 C) in the second stage, and the continuing range runs from 230 F to less than 1,000 F (110 C to less than 538 C). SSS is the basis for systems tested to ASTM E814 (UL1479) and CAN/ULC-S115 with ratings up to 4 hours. Follow the published design.
What temperature window can crews apply and then leave SSS100 in service?
Application temperature is 35 F to 100 F (2 C to 38 C). In-service temperature is -10 F to 185 F (-23 C to 85 C). Store unopened material at 40 F to 95 F (4 C to 35 C). Shelf life is 24 months from the date of manufacture. The dried sealant is sandable and paintable, water resistant, and will not re-emulsify when dry. VOC content is 29.2 g/L; STC is 62 on a specific construction.
What safety limit applies while SpecSeal SSS100 is still wet?
The PDS states the product contains water and is conductive until dry. Do not apply in the presence of exposed or energized electrical conductors. After dry it is water resistant and will not re-emulsify. The formula contains no solvents that might adversely affect plastic pipes or cable jackets and is marked FBC System Compatible with FlowGuard Gold, BlazeMaster, and Corzan piping, yet STI still asks crews to confirm any pipe-maker restrictions before install.
